Champions League Results: Cypriot Champions Make Surprise, Beat Villarreal 1-0

Gilabola.com – Pafos stunned Villarreal and recorded their first Champions League win, but how can this young team write history?

Cypriot champions Pafos recorded a historic milestone in the Champions League after beating Villarreal with a score of 1-0 on matchday 4 of the Champions League league phase, a result that further confirms the extraordinary rise of the club which was only founded 11 years ago under the direction of former Arsenal assistant, Juan Carlos Carcedo.

Dutch defender Derrick Luckassen became the hero with a free header in the 46th minute using a corner kick from former Watford winger, Ken Sema. Ironically, Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, who is known as a Pafos fan, was reportedly one minute late entering the stands and missed the goal that changed the club’s history.

Young Club’s Fast Journey to the European Stage

Pafos was only founded in 2014 through the merger of two local clubs, AEK Kouklia and AEP Paphos — which previously was also the result of a merger of two other teams in 2000.

They started from the second caste, went up and down until finally stabilizing after being taken over by a Russian businessman with British citizenship, Roman Dubov, in 2017. Dubov was known to the British public when he became the owner of Portsmouth in 2011.

Since Carcedo’s arrival in 2023, Pafos won their first two titles: the Cypriot Cup in 2024 and the league last season. They also made an impressive debut in Europe by reaching the knockout stages of the Conference League the previous season.

This season, they have lost just one of their 10 Champions League games — including qualifying — and that was to giants Bayern Munich. Now, the victory over Villarreal is the next monumental achievement.

Villarreal Dominant, but Pafos More Effective

Villarreal, who are yet to win in Europe this season despite being third in La Liga, actually created more chances. However, they failed to beat home goalkeeper Neofytos Michail who appeared solid throughout the match.

Apart from Luckassen, Pafos also has big names like David Luiz. The former defender for Arsenal, Chelsea and the Brazilian national team played the full 90 minutes and helped kill Villarreal’s attack which was led by former Premier League players such as Ayoze Perez, Nicolas Pepe and Manor Solomon.

Temporarily Headquartered in Limassol

Pafos host Villarreal at the Alphamega Stadium, Limassol — about 64 kilometers from the city of Paphos — because their original stadium does not yet meet UEFA standards. Even though they are far from a true base, public support remains hot and is part of their fairy tale this season.
