Pep Guardiola admits big rotation decisions caused Leverkusen’s defeat
Gilabola.com – Manchester City suffered a 0-2 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen after Pep Guardiola made a major rotation by replacing ten players, a decision he later admitted was a mistake.
Goals from Alejandro Grimaldo and Patrick Schick ensured victory for the visitors, while a number of City stars who were only introduced in the second half failed to turn things around. Guardiola assessed that his team appeared less determined and was missing important elements to compete at the highest level.
This defeat came just days after Manchester City also lost in the Premier League to Newcastle. These conditions prompted Guardiola to make extreme rotations in this European match.
Only Nico Gonzalez continued to play as a starter from the previous match. Meanwhile big names such as Erling Haaland, Phil Foden, Jeremy Doku, Gianluigi Donnarumma and Ruben Dias were placed on the bench.
Guardiola hopes that this big rotation will provide new energy for his squad. However, this plan did not go as expected because Leverkusen appeared more effective.
Leverkusen’s first goal came through Grimaldo who took advantage of City’s transition weaknesses. This goal made the hosts lose their rhythm from the middle of the first half.
City tried to increase their aggressiveness in the second half, but Schick added to their misery with a goal that widened the gap. City’s defense looked shaky in the face of the opponent’s fast attacks.
Guardiola then brought on Haaland, Foden, Doku and Rayan Cherki to catch up. However, Leverkusen managed to maintain their discipline and maintain their lead without conceding.
In an interview after the match, Guardiola admitted that he had too much rotation. He said that he understood the criticism of his decision and considered that changing ten players might be excessive.
Guardiola also said that if his team won, the decision would not be disputed. However, seeing the final result, he considered that such a large rotation was not appropriate for an important match.
Additionally, he revealed that even though the starters were quality players, his team still lacked something needed to compete at the highest level that night. He felt the level of presence and decisiveness in decision making on the field was not what he expected.
Guardiola believes City is not convincing enough in determining when to attack or defend. He considered that his team failed to show the determination that should appear in big matches.
Several opportunities were created, but City’s shots were often blocked or did not meet the target. Leverkusen also defended very tightly and disciplined.
Even though they lost, City’s condition in the Champions League standings is not too bad. They are in sixth position, although they still have the potential to drop if the results of other matches are unfavorable.
Guardiola emphasized that his team must immediately recover in the next match. He admits that this match is a big missed opportunity, but he believes City still has a chance to compete again.
