Amorim Responds to Scholes’ Criticism with Manchester United’s Convincing Victory
Gilabola.com – Ruben Amorim provided a quick response to Paul Scholes’ harsh criticism after the draw against West Ham, as Manchester United recovered with a 4-1 win over Wolves and moved closer to the Champions League places.
Scholes previously questioned Amorim’s capabilities and a style of play that he deemed did not reflect the club’s character, while United showed clear improvement through dominating the game and more effective finishing.
Manchester United entered Amorim’s second season in a more stable condition than the transition period after he replaced Erik ten Hag. Last season, United slumped to finish at the bottom of the table for the first time in the Premier League era.
Without European competition, their schedule is looser and helps improve performance in the league. United have now matched Amorim’s league win tally last season, showing consistent progress.
The match against Wolves was proof of this improvement. Wolves are indeed in the bottom position, but Manchester United still appeared aggressive and pressed from the start.
Bruno Fernandes led the team with two goals, while the attack line had a total of 27 shots. Ten of these went straight at goal, showing increased effectiveness.
However, before this match, the 1-1 draw against West Ham raised big questions. Soungoutou Magassa scored the equalizer which left Old Trafford dissatisfied.
This situation opened up criticism from Paul Scholes. He said that he thought Amorim did not understand the club’s identity and did not deliver the expected offensive game.
Scholes considers Amorim’s three-back tactics to be contrary to Manchester United’s playing history. He gave the example that the club had never consistently used this scheme.
The comments come amid reports that players were annoyed by former stars’ criticism. Apart from Scholes, there were also strong comments from Roy Keane and Gary Neville.
However, the criticism did not appear to have affected United’s performance at Molineux. The players appeared confident and continued to attack even though Jean-Ricner Bellegarde equalized.
Manchester United responded in the second half with greater intensity. Attacks are neater, opportunities are more mature, and the back line is more disciplined in protecting the area.
After the match, Amorim explained to BBC Sport that he thought the team’s game went well overall. He added that the score should have been higher.
Amorim also explained the contents of his conversation in the dressing room. He said the main message was not about tactics, but about the final solution which had to be better.
According to him, United actually dominated many matches but were less sharp in completing opportunities. This is the main focus for improvement.
He also stressed the importance of maintaining balance. Amorim asks players to not only focus on scoring goals, but also guarding the defensive area so that they don’t concede easily.
Our opinion
Scholes’ criticism was sharp, but the win over Wolves showed that Amorim is starting to find rhythm with this squad. Consistency remains a big challenge, but progress from last season is clear and gives hope that Amorim’s approach can be successful if given enough time.
