Who is Said El Mala? The 19-year-old winger who is being fought over by the Premier League giants
Gilabola.com – Manchester United are starting to show the direction of their transfer policy ahead of the turn of the year. The club nicknamed the Red Devils has reportedly made an important decision regarding the transfer value of Said El Mala, a young FC Koln star who is now on coach Ruben Amorim’s radar.
The name El Mala has been talked about more and more often in the last few months. The 19-year-old striker is considered one of the most promising talents in the Bundesliga, attracting interest from a number of elite European clubs, including Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.
MU and Tottenham Approach FC Koln
According to German media reports, SportBild, Manchester United and Tottenham have made initial approaches to FC Koln to discuss the possibility of El Mala’s transfer. Even though there has been no official offer, this initial communication confirms the seriousness of the two Premier League clubs.
Koln itself reportedly set a high valuation for the player. If released in the summer transfer market, El Mala is said to be priced at around €60 million (≈ IDR 1.02 trillion). This figure is far above the limit that United and Tottenham are ready to spend.
Price Limit from Manchester United
The latest report states that Manchester United and Spurs are both willing to spend up to €40 million (≈ IDR 680 billion) for El Mala. This value is still quite far from Cologne’s wishes, so the potential for long negotiations seems inevitable.
Not only these two clubs, interest in El Mala also comes from other European giants. Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona and Bayern Munich are said to be monitoring the player’s progress in recent weeks.
Not Certain to Move in January
Even though the interest is clear, it is not yet certain whether Manchester United will make concrete maneuvers in the January transfer market. However, El Mala is projected as one of the most attractive prospects in the Bundesliga at the moment, as reported by the Mirror.
Premier League clubs’ interest in El Mala has actually emerged since last summer. Brighton & Hove Albion reportedly even made an offer which was ultimately rejected by Cologne.
Brighton Has Made an Offer
Brighton is said to have submitted a proposal worth €10 million (≈ Rp. 170 billion) last summer, but it was immediately rejected by Cologne. This fact was later confirmed indirectly by Lionel Souque, member of FC Koln’s supervisory board.
In his interview on the OMR podcast, Souque revealed that Brighton owner Tony Bloom had contacted him personally.
“Through a friend at the carnival, the owner of the club got my number, called, and tried to see if he had a chance through me after failing to get through management,” Souque said.
“I said, ‘I’m a fruit and vegetable dealer, you’re a poker player—there’s no way we can negotiate.’ He didn’t think it was funny.”
Souque emphasized that transfer decisions are entirely in the hands of Koln’s sporting director, Thomas Kessler, and the club currently wants to focus on developing El Mala as a long-term asset.
Short Profile of Said El Mala
El Mala is a versatile player on the front line, although this season he has played more often as a left winger. The Germany U-21 national team player appeared impressive with a record of six goals and three assists from 14 matches in all competitions with Koln.
Its consistent performance at such a young age makes it considered a strategic investment, not just a short-term project.
Our View
Manchester United’s interest in Said El Mala reflects a change in their more measured approach to transfers. By setting the price limit at around €40 million, MU appears to be more careful and does not want to get caught in a price war that has often been detrimental in the past.
However, with so many elite clubs eyeing El Mala, United must move smart and quickly if they really want to secure his services. If not, this young Cologne talent could end up moving to a direct rival—and that could potentially be a long-term regret for the Red Devils.
