Liverpool Can Repeat Old Transfer Strategy When The Wanderers Slump
Gilabola.com – Liverpool face Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield with the two teams contrasting conditions, amidst league form Communists which is not yet stable, Wolves’ deep crisis which is threatened by the Premier League’s poor record, as well as the potential for old transfer opportunities to open up again.
Liverpool have not yet completely found consistency in their efforts to defend the Premier League title. Arne Slot’s team is currently in fifth place in the standings, ten points behind Arsenal despite having recorded six matches without defeat in all competitions throughout December.
This performance slightly eased the pressure on Arne Slot which had previously increased sharply. A series of nine defeats in 12 matches has left Liverpool quite far behind in the top flight competition this season.
However, Liverpool’s situation is still much better than Wolves. The team from the West Midlands came to Anfield bottom of the standings with just two points and had not picked up a single league win all season.
Wolves’ last win in the league was recorded last April when they beat Leicester City. Since then, they have gone 21 league matches without a win, only able to steal points from matches against Brentford, Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton.
Wolves’ away record is also very poor. The draw at Tottenham was the only time they avoided defeat away from home this season, with the last away win coming at Old Trafford in April.
Wolves slump and threaten a bad record
Wolves came to Anfield with the burden of 11 consecutive defeats in all competitions. If they fail to get points again, they have the potential to record the worst start to a season in Premier League history.
This condition makes internal pressure even greater. Wolves sacked Vitor Pereira in November and appointed Rob Edwards as a replacement, but those changes have not resulted in a single point so far.
A distance of 16 points from the safe zone makes the mission to survive in the Premier League look very difficult. The situation became more complicated after club chairman Jeff Shi resigned from his position due to pressure from supporters.
Wolves’ problems were also triggered by summer transfer activities that were not effective. The departures of Matheus Cunha and Rayan Ait-Nouri to big clubs leave a big hole, while spending of more than 100 million pounds has not had a significant impact.
After the defeat to Brentford, Matt Doherty delivered a harsh assessment of the team’s condition. He revealed that this situation was the worst in a long time and emphasized that Wolves needed additional players, either through loans or other schemes.
Doherty also emphasized the importance of players who really want to help the club, not just looking for a way out. He said the entire squad must return to last season’s level of performance if they want to stay in the league.
Furthermore, Doherty asked his teammates to carry out a self-evaluation. He questioned whether the players wanted to be remembered as fighters until the end of the season or instead chose the easy path by leaving the club or reducing the intensity of training.
Andre Trindade and Liverpool’s Long Chance
In the midst of Wolves’ chaos, transfer speculation has emerged again. Several players are expected to leave if relegation is inevitable, including Jorgen Strand Larsen and Joao Gomes who are interested in other clubs.
Andre Trindade’s name has also emerged again. The Brazilian midfielder was a target for Liverpool in the summer of 2023 before the Reds shifted their focus to Wataru Endo.
Andre finally joined Wolves in August 2024 with a transfer value of up to IDR 474 billion. His first season was considered quite solid even though the team’s overall performance dropped drastically.
Even though transfer rumors have subsided recently, Andre is still considered a valuable asset for Wolves. The 2026 World Cup factor could also push him to look for a new club because he has only appeared once with the Brazilian national team since March 2025.
There is no indication that Liverpool will pursue Andre again in the near future. However, Liverpool’s need for a defensive midfielder has been discussed again considering the team’s fluctuating performance this season.
Liverpool itself has a track record of returning to old targets. Mohamed Salah is the most successful example of this approach after failing to be recruited previously.
Apart from that, Liverpool also often benefits when recruiting players from relegated clubs. Andy Robertson, Georginio Wijnaldum, Xherdan Shaqiri and Danny Ings are proof that this strategy can work effectively.
Our opinion:
In our opinion, Wolves’ increasingly deteriorating situation has the potential to open up opportunities again for Liverpool to take advantage of the transfer market carefully, although the decision to renew interest in Andre Trindade must still be based on tactical needs, not just opportunities that arise due to the opponent’s crisis.
