Agent Senne Lammens Reveals Manchester United’s Initial Plans Regarding Andre Onana
Manchester United underwent a major change of plans in the goalkeeping sector after signing Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp, with the player’s agent revealing that the club initially intended to retain Andre Onana as a mentor before finally releasing the Cameroonian goalkeeper.
Lammens was recruited for around IDR 416 billion, signed a five-year contract, and has so far performed quite convincingly under the direction of Ruben Amorim even though the initial situation was not designed to make him the main choice so quickly.
Senne Lammens officially joined Manchester United last summer after a rapidly developing negotiation process towards the close of the transfer window. The 23-year-old goalkeeper arrives with a reputation as one of the most promising young talents in Europe.
Lammens’ move to Old Trafford was completed on the final day of the transfer window, after he agreed a long-term contract with the English club. Manchester United sees it as an investment for the future that requires time to adapt to tougher competition.
Since joining, Lammens has had the opportunity to play and leave a positive impression even though he has only recorded two clean sheets. His appearance is considered quite stable in the middle of Manchester United’s back line which often changes due to problems with players’ fitness and performance.
Manchester United’s Initial Plans
Senne Lammens’ agent, Mark Volders, explained that Manchester United initially had different plans regarding the main goalkeeper position. According to him, the club actually intends to keep Andre Onana at Old Trafford.
Volders said that Onana is projected to be a companion figure who helps Lammens adapt to the pressure and demands of the Premier League. In this scenario, Lammens is not immediately required to take on big responsibilities in his first season.
He also explained that some of the public criticism arose because of the expectations of big names in goal. Many parties are said to hope that Manchester United will bring in a top goalkeeper with a global reputation such as Gianluigi Donnarumma or Emiliano Martínez.
However, within the club, according to Volders, the approach is more pragmatic by preparing a gradual development path for Lammens. The plan is believed to have been under consideration for quite some time before finally changing in the final phase of the transfer market.
A change in direction occurred when Andre Onana was released on loan to Turkish club Trabzonspor. The decision was taken not long after Lammens’ arrival, which made his responsibilities in the squad bigger than initially expected.
Volders assessed that in the end Manchester United fully trusted his client. He said the club changed its attitude at the last minute and decided to make Lammens a core part of the team project.
Impact on Senne Lammens
With these changes, Lammens had to adapt more quickly than originally planned. He is now not just a long-term project, but an immediate solution in the Manchester United goalkeeper position.
This situation has also put Lammens under performance pressure since the start of the season. However, he is considered capable of responding to these challenges with relatively good composure and consistency.
The player’s agent said that looking at developments so far, Manchester United’s decision was considered the right one. According to him, judging from the results on the field, the club can feel confident that it has taken the right steps.
