Bayern Munich Prepares to Lose, City Targets Vincent Kompany to Replace Guardiola
Bayern Munich is preparing to lose their famous coach, Vincent Kompany, because the Belgian club architect is reportedly being targeted by Manchester City to replace Pep Guardiola.
Revealed by journalists Football InsiderWayne Veysey, Manchester City have made Kompany their main target to replace Guardiola, who is expected to leave the Etihad Stadium after a decade of coaching the Spanish coach.
City have started making plans to anticipate Guardiola’s possible departure, with initial talks with potential new managers.
Enzo Maresca – who once worked as Guardiola’s assistant in the Citizens squad, told Chelsea that he had spoken to City and Juventus representatives before he was finally sacked by the West London club last month.
Alonso is also targeted, but Kompany remains number one
Then, the name Xabi Alonso also emerged, who was also very interested in the giant Premier League club, especially after the young Spanish coach left Real Madrid.
However, according to unidentified sources, Kompany is City’s first choice, although persuading him to leave Bayern Munich would likely be an almost impossible task.
One of the factors that worked in City’s favor was Kompany’s strong emotional attachment to the club he played for and led as captain, as they secured many trophies during the glory days of his career as a top European footballer.
Bayern Munich has signed Kompany to a long-term contract
Earlier this week, Daily Telegraph reported that ‘sources close to the club (Bayern Munich) do not want him to leave, even if a position at Manchester City becomes available’.
Currently, Vincent Kompany is still under contract as head coach of Bayern Munich until 30 June 2029. This contract is an extension of his initial contract, which was originally due to expire in the summer of 2027.
He joined Bayern as head coach in May 2024, with an initial contract of three years, or until 2027.
Kompany then extended his contract until 30 June 2029, after he secured initial success with Die Roten, including securing the Bundesliga title and the German Super Cup.
The 39-year-old former central defender started his career as a coach at his childhood club, Anderlecht, in 2019. Then he went on hiatus, before finally returning to manage the Belgian club from 2020 to 2022.
The former City player from 2008 to 2019 then defended Burnley from 2022 to 2024, before finally coming to the Allianz Arena in 2024.
