Lewandowski, Yamal and Bernal bring Barcelona to a landslide win over Los Bermellones
Barcelona achieved a convincing 3-0 victory over Mallorca in extension League at Camp Nou, Saturday night, while opening a temporary gap of four points at the top of the standings. After having difficulties at the start of the match, the home team appeared much more dominant throughout the last hour of the match. Robert Lewandowski, Lamine Yamal and Marc Bernal were the scorers who secured the full three points in front of their own fans.
This result extends the Blaugrana’s positive momentum in domestic competitions. Apart from maintaining top position, this victory also provides important capital ahead of the Cup match against Atlético Madrid.
Difficult Start and Lewandowski’s Opener
Mallorca appeared surprising in the first 30 minutes. Former Barcelona winger, Jan Virgili, is the main threat through his speed and agility. He repeatedly won duels and created at least three golden opportunities. However, poor finishing and luck caused the visitors to fail to score.
Barcelona slowly began to find the rhythm of the game. Marcus Rashford became the main attack motor with active movements and several shot attempts. One of his shots from outside the penalty box was blocked by goalkeeper Leo Román. The ball fell to his feet Robert Lewandowskiwho calmly completed the opportunity to become the opening goal.
Approaching halftime, Barcelona almost doubled their lead. Rashford’s free kick was again saved by Leo Román, then Jules Koundé sent the ball to Lamine Yamal who was standing free in front of the goal. However, this open opportunity failed to be exploited. The first half ended with a score of 1-0.
Total Domination in the Second Half
Entering the second half, Barcelona appeared much more aggressive and controlled the game. Pressure after pressure continued to be put on Mallorca’s defense. Lamin Yamal Johan Mojica was brought down in the penalty box right in front of the referee, but no foul was given, including from VAR.
Marc Casadó almost doubled the lead with a shot from the edge of the box that hit the crossbar. The second goal was finally created in the 60th minute through Lamine Yamal’s long-range shot which glided smoothly into the goal.
Barcelona’s lead widened thanks to the third goal scored Marc Bernal. This goal started with a series of passes from the back line to penetrate Mallorca’s pressing. Bernal received the ball in the penalty box, outwitted the opposing defender, then completed the opportunity calmly. This goal was the conclusion of a neat and effective teamwork.
Young Player Debuts and Final Match Notes
This match was also a special moment for Tommy Marqués. The young La Masia midfielder made his debut in the first team when he came on in the last 10 minutes and received a warm welcome from the Camp Nou public.
Even though they won by a landslide, Barcelona still made several mistakes in possession of the ball. This situation forced goalkeeper Joan García to make a number of saves to keep the goal clean. However, overall, Barcelona’s second half performance was solid and entertaining.
Coach Hansi Flick also took advantage of this advantage to rest several key players ahead of the important match against Atlético Madrid in the cup. With this victory, Barcelona is certain to stay at the top of the standings at least until the following week.
