AC Milan loses against Ducali Gialloblu at San Siro, Troilo’s goal is confirmed via VAR
AC Milan suffered a 0-1 defeat to Parma on Serie A match at San Siro. Mariano Troilo’s only goal at the end of the match, which was disallowed by referee Piccinini before being approved by VAR review, ensured that the Rossoneri lost full points at home.
This result was Milan’s second defeat in the league this season. Previously, they also lost in the opening week against Cremonese with a score of 1-2, also at the San Siro. This defeat also ended a series of 24 league matches without a negative result. In the standings, Inter are now 10 points ahead and getting further away, while Milan failed to take advantage of the opportunity to widen the gap from Napoli and Juventus in the competition for Champions League tickets.
Wasted Opportunities, Parma Perseveres
Milan controlled the game from the start, but finishing was the main problem. Christian Pulisic and Ardon Jashari tested Edoardo Corvi several times, but the Parma goalkeeper appeared alert. Corvi also parried Pulisic’s shot from a tight angle after a quick exit from his nest.
Before halftime, a golden opportunity presented itself when Adrien Rabiot headed Davide Bartesaghi’s lofted ball towards Pulisic. From a distance of about 13 meters, Pulisic shot wide.
Rafael Leao received a yellow card because he was considered to be simulating in the penalty box. Not long ago, Milan had two consecutive opportunities. Leao received Alexis Saelemaekers’ breakthrough pass, but Corvi managed to touch the ball first. The loose ball was struck by Pulisic, but Troilo’s desperate tackle thwarted the opportunity right in front of the empty goal.
Parma were under more pressure, but threatened when Emanuele Valeri failed to meet a cross in an open position, forcing Mike Maignan to make a difficult save.
In the 64th minute, Milan almost broke the deadlock. The ball from a bad sweep from a corner fell at the far post and was struck by Leao with an acrobatic right-footed kick. The ball hit the inside of the near post, rolled across the goal line, then out the other side.
Troilo’s Goal and the VAR Controversy
Strahinja Pavlovic, who came on as a substitute, headed the free kick wide. However, the decisive moment actually came from the visitors’ side.
Parma scored from a corner when Troilo jumped at the far post, past Bartesaghi, and headed the ball into the net. The referee blew the whistle for a foul, but after a VAR review, the goal was awarded. Valenti was deemed to have only obstructed Maignan’s position without committing a direct violation, so the initial decision was overturned.
In the remaining time, Niclas Fullkrug twice threatened with headers from corner kicks, but one went over and the other was deflected narrowly at the near post.
This defeat was a blow for Milan. Apart from failing to keep their distance from the competitors at the top, the 10 point difference from Inter makes the chances of winning the title even tougher. Parma, who came in on the back of two consecutive wins, were able to make the most of one of the few opportunities they had and came away with three valuable points from San Siro.
