Pochettino, who is currently managing the United States national team on a contract until the 2026 World Cup, explained that Ferguson asked for his telephone number through the secretary of the league managers’ association.
He was then invited to have lunch together in London.
“The meeting took place in London, between fellow coaches, between a genius and a student,” said Pochettino.

This meeting took place when Pochettino was still coaching Tottenham Hotspur and was in his best performance. Since then, this moment has often been cited as the beginning of Old Trafford’s interest in him as a long-term coaching candidate.
Even though he was continuously linked with managing Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea, the opportunity to actually coach the club nicknamed the Red Devils never materialized.

On the same occasion, Pochettino also shared a light story that happened during lunch.

Ferguson then proposed a challenge in the form of trivia questions.
He asked Pochettino to name the Argentinian player who scored a goal in the 1930 World Cup final.
Without hesitation, Pochettino answered Guillermo Stábile. This answer surprised Ferguson.
“The name suddenly appeared in my mind. In the end, I paid for lunch,” he said.
Desire to Return to the Premier League
Currently, Pochettino’s main focus is preparing the United States national team for the 2026 World Cup which will be held at home.
However, he admitted that he still had an emotional closeness to the Spurs he had worked with.
More than that, he also openly stated his desire to return to coaching in the Premier League.
According to him, his ambition to win the league title and Champions League has not yet died out.
“Right now I want to enjoy the World Cup. After that, I want to try again. I almost won the Premier League and the Champions League, and I want to fight for it again,” he explained.
The Future at Old Trafford Still a Question Mark
Pochettino’s comments came amidst the uncertain situation currently being experienced by Manchester United. The club is undergoing a transition period after the tumultuous 2025/2026 season.
The position of coach for next season has not yet been confirmed.
