From ordering etiquette to knowing who can drink to understand the mysterious art of “rotation”, having tips on insiders will help you mingle without losing beats (or beer).
As an American who lives in London, married to a London citizen born and raised who was joking he was baptized in a pub (not entirely incorrect), I have undergone these differences directly. Fortunately, I have a British husband to help me avoid shame or confused!
So, to help you have the best experience on your London trip, we have collected this English pub trip tips.
Pub is the center of British culture but they are not like American bars. You don’t need a degree in etiquette from Oxford to enjoy it. But knowing some of the basics will help you avoid awkward mistakes and enjoy full experiences like London.
Whether you appear in a historic environment pub for one liter or order a gastropub table for dinner, tips for visiting Pub London will help you feel confident, avoiding mistakes and enjoying more authentic local experiences.

1. How to order in the London pub
In most of the London Pub, there is no table service. You have to go to the bar, place an order and pay immediately. Don’t expect anyone to come and drink or order food or food. And some London pubs did not even take cash.
Legit- A pub near Battersea Power Station once refused my money and I almost walked out! So, have a credit card or payment card without contact.

At a time -time, it might feel like an organized chaos but usually there is a queue that is not spoken in the bar. Make eye contact with a bartender when you are next and they will serve you in turn.
One important tip: British people usually say, “may I have one liter …” rather than Americans “can do a …” which can be considered suddenly. A little politeness to be a long Far here. So, in this case I encourage you to speak English English. But- not with an experimental accent!
This order style will show people in the pub around you and behind the bar that you are a smart traveler.
2. What is expected from the culture of Pub London
London Pub is not just a place to drink, they are the center of the community or ‘pubLic Houses’. It is common to see grandparents, children and dogs enjoy the view, especially on weekends.
Most local residents visit their favorite pub on Christmas for celebration and chat with neighbors.
Legal drinking age is 18. And if you look under 25, bring an ID. Those aged 16 or 17 can drink beer, grapes, or apple juice with food and adults who accompany them- but they cannot buy them themselves.
By understanding the rules and rituals of this pub, you will experience it like a local person, not an awkward tourist floating near the door.
3. Understanding Ritual Purchase Rounds
When you are with the group in a London pub, it is a habit to buy a round. Everyone takes drinks buying for the whole group. This is a social contract that is not spoken and missing your round is a big problem. People may not say anything but them will see!
Don’t worry, you don’t need to memorize everyone’s drink orders like experienced bartender. Just ask what they like when you turn and get ready to return the favor if someone treats you first.
4. TIP IN LONDON PUB
Tip is not expected in most London pubs, especially if you order in a bar. If the service is truly extraordinary, you might leave a small tip or offer to “buy drinks to the bartender.” In practice, they will only add the cost of drinks to your bill as thank you.
If you eat at gastropub with table service, giving a 12.5% tip is valued but not needed. Check your bill when you accept it to see if it’s added.
5. Find a table and when to wait
In the traditional pub, the seat came first, served first. If you see an empty table, do it. During peak hours, it is really normal to share space with strangers. Ask, “Is this chair free?”. You might even want to be English and say, ‘Sorry. Is this chair free? ‘
Again, don’t try to do an accent! I want you to understand culture, not silly.
However, in gastropub (pubs that focus on the first food and drink second), you may need to wait to sit or order a table first. Don’t assume you can take any empty place. If doubt, check -in with staff when you arrive.
6. What to drink and eat in the London pub
From craft beer to classic fruit juice, Pub London offers a variety of impressive drinks. Don’t feel depressed to order alcohol. Soft drinks and free choice of alcohol are very normal. But don’t expect a long list of cocktails. Most of the pubs remain at the bottom. Drinks with vodka are also not very popular. You are better with gin.
Gastropub, on the other hand, has lifted the bar when it comes to food. They often use seasonal ingredients and are local sources, with frequent changing menus. You may still find classic like fish and chips or steak and pie ale, but the quality generally exceeds the “pub grub.”
7. Closing time and last order
Most of the London pubs are closed around 11 pm, although this varies based on the area and day. The “last order” is called about 15-30 minutes before it is closed. That’s your last warning. After the bell rang, the bar finished served.
Unlike in the US, no one is lingering after hours. Staff will start cleaning the table and gently take guests. Plan you out.
8. Explore more with a local food tour
If you want to dive deeper into the pub and London food scenes, there is a very good local tour that includes stopping at historic pubs, food markets and hidden gems in the environment.
Below are the top choices for culinary lovers.
