Travel Tips for Choosing a Hotel When Visiting London

As an American living in London since 2013, one of the biggest mistakes I see travelers make is choosing the wrong hotel when visiting London. That’s understandable. Planning a trip to London can be overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time here.

Whether you’re considering a luxury weekend or a longer stay to explore London’s hidden gems, choosing a hotel when visiting London is an important decision that can make or break your trip.

Personal Recommendation

Ideally, you have a local friend in London who can guide you about where to stay. Maybe I can be that person for you?

Having lived in London and running this London travel site for over a decade, I’ve seen a lot! From luxury five-star hotels to charming boutique accommodation in hidden corners of the city, Mr Sunny and I have had a lot to experience in London. Most importantly, he and generations of his family were born in London. So, we always offer in-depth ‘English’ information.

In fact, I worked for several years as a video content manager for London’s largest hotel group. So- I know a lot about hotel options in London.

Choosing a hotel when visiting London is not just about finding a place to sleep. It’s about creating a base from which you can explore the city, with ease, comfort and a touch of style. Your hotel should enhance your London experience, not hinder it.

Look at the Map: Prioritize Locations

Before you even start looking for a hotel, make a list of the top attractions you want to see in London. Whether it’s the British Museum, Buckingham Palace or West End theatres, pinpoint these locations on the map. This simple step can save hours of travel time and unnecessary hassle.

Choosing a hotel when visiting London means considering its proximity to the places you must visit. London is HUGE and travel times can take longer than expected. This especially happens during rush hour or when there is a train strike. Without a doubt, these are my top tips for London trip planning!

If you are focusing on London’s most iconic attractions and things to do, then it is advisable to stay in the city center. That’s why I created the map below for you. It represents the best location for people planning their first London trip.

London Hotels

If you haven’t booked a hotel for your trip to London yet, here’s an interactive map to get you started! It is based on the most central location in the city.

By booking a hotel close to the main things you want to do, you will not only save time but also money on daily travel costs. Whether you’re planning a romantic getaway or a family vacation, living close to major tourist attractions allows you to spend more time enjoying the city and less time traveling.

For example, if you are taking a Private Tour of the Tower of London with Beefeater, you should arrive at 8:30 am. So you’ll want to be relatively close to the Tower of London on the day!

Environment: Finding Your Perfect Match

London’s neighborhoods are as diverse as its people, each offering its own unique atmosphere and charm. Here are some of my top neighborhood recommendations for where to stay when visiting London:

– Westminster: Ideal for history buffs and first-time visitors. Home to Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey. Couples and solo travelers will appreciate the easy access to iconic landmarks.

One particularly luxurious hotel in the area, which has a spa consistently rated as the best in the city is the Corinthia London.

– Covent Garden: Perfect for theater lovers and foodies. The area is full of energy, street performers and top restaurants. Ideal for couples or solo female travelers looking for a vibrant nightlife. This is where you will find me most often and most frequently featured on my social media accounts.

You can read my review of One Aldwych. This is a fantastic hotel with one of the best hotel cocktail bars in London. Below is a room at the Covent Garden Hotel, which is a Firmdale Hotel and part of a group of beautiful independent hotels in London.

– Mayfair: For luxury travelers. This upscale area is known for its high-end shopping malls, fine dining and five-star hotels. This is a great choice for wealthy travelers looking for sophistication and elegance.

– London Bridge: A mix of old and new, this area is perfect for culture buffs and foodies. The Shard, Borough Market and Tate Modern are nearby. Families and couples will love the variety of attractions and dining options.

You’ll also be near the Southbank Centre, which I’ve featured in the video below.

– Tower Bridge: Ideal for those who want to immerse themselves in history while enjoying modern comfort. Close to the Tower of London, this area is perfect for families and history buffs. It also offers stunning views of the river. To find out more, read Things to Do Near the Tower of London.

The following is a review of one of the hotels where I stayed which was located just a few steps from the Tower of London. It was the Tower Suites by Blue Orchid.

– Kensington: Perfect for museum lovers and those looking for a residential feel. Home to the Natural History Museum, V&A and Hyde Park. Families and culture lovers will enjoy the quieter and more elegant atmosphere.

– Victoria: Transport hub with access to many parts of London. Suitable for business travelers and those planning a day trip out of town. The area is practical and comfortable, with a good selection of hotels for a variety of budgets.

Getting to Gatwick Airport is also very easy, via the Gatwick Express. Be careful if you choose airport and train services that don’t undergo maintenance when you need it. Visit their website for updates.

– London Bridge: This delightful area combines historical charm with modern attractions. It’s ideal for culture lovers, foodies and families. With landmarks such as The Shard, Borough Market and Tate Modern nearby, you’ll enjoy a mix of history and contemporary culture, plus a wide choice of dining options to suit every taste.

Please note that it is also very popular for ‘hen-do’s’ which is the equivalent of a bachelorette party. On Friday and Saturday nights it is quite popular – and the groups can be very energetic!

Terms to Know: Decoding British Jargon

Booking a hotel in London may involve terms that are unfamiliar to American travelers. Here are some important terms to know:

– En suite: This means the room has a private bathroom. In London, having an en suite bathroom is a standard expectation in most hotels, but it’s always a good idea to double check.

– Private bathroom: This may sound like an en-suite bathroom, but it could mean that the bathroom is private to your room but located outside it, sometimes at the end of the hall. Make sure you know the correct settings.

– Shared bathrooms: Not common in hotels but can be found in hostels or very budget accommodation. This means the bathroom is shared with other guests and is located outside your room.

Knowing these terms will help you avoid surprises and ensure you book a room with the amenities you expect.

Differences Between the US and the UK: What to Expect

Hotels in London differ from hotels in the US in several key ways. Understanding these differences can help you prepare for your stay and avoid unwanted surprises.

– Washcloths: Not all hotels in the UK provide washcloths in the bathroom, so if this is a must for you, consider packing your own. For example, we had a great stay at a pub hotel near the Warner Bros. Harry Potter Studio Tour, but there were no washcloths in the room. Luckily I brought some. If this is news to you, be sure to read it London Essentials: What to Pack for a Trip to London.

– Focus on sustainability: UK hotels are increasingly focusing on sustainability. This means you’re likely to find large bottles of refillable toiletries, rather than single-use items. This is a positive step for the environment, but could come as a surprise if you were expecting individual toiletries.

– Bathroom light switch: You may find the bathroom light switch located outside the bathroom door. This is unique to UK buildings, so don’t be confused if you can’t find the switch inside.

– Shower setup: In some bathrooms in the UK, you will find glass doors that only cover half the shower area, rather than a full door or curtain. It’s meant to be stylish but may be unexpected if you’re used to full coverage.

– Electricity via room key: In many hotels, electricity only works when you insert the room key card into the slot near the door. This is an energy saving feature but can be confusing if you have never encountered it before.

Being aware of these differences ensures you prepare well for your stay, allowing you to focus on enjoying London rather than wondering how the lights work.

You also need to consider whether you are traveling from Heathrow or Gatwick airport too. Here are some tips on which airport to choose, if you are at the planning stage of your trip to London.
