Analysis of the Opportunities for 11 Premier League Clubs to Appear in the 2026/27 European Competition
The competition for European competition next season is one of the most exciting in history. This is fueled by a unique possibility that paves the way for up to 11 Premier League club appear on the European stage in the 2026-27 season.
Even though the race for the league title is starting to look narrow, the competitiveness in the Premier League is actually getting higher. One of the tightest sectors is seen in the race for tickets to European competitions, where up to 13 teams still have a chance.
Unprecedented Tight Competition
A number of factors make the race for European tickets this season very open. The expanded European competition format, the presence of the Conference League, and the strong performance of English clubs at European level were the triggers.
Apart from that, the points gap between teams in the middle of the board is very tight. Currently, the gap between fifth and 13th is just seven points, the smallest in the same period since the first Premier League season in 1992-93. In fact, the difference between seventh and 13th place is just four points, making it one of the tightest in league history.

In the 2025-26 season, nine English clubs have qualified for European competition: six for the Champions League, two for the Europa League and one for the Conference League. This number has the potential to happen again, and could even increase, although it depends on a number of conditions.
Champions League Slot Odds
The new format of the Champions League allows an additional two slots for the league with the best performance in European competitions based on UEFA’s points system.
The Premier League will almost certainly get one additional slot. With five of England’s nine representatives still remaining in European competition, this opportunity is very big. In fact, with just one draw from a total of 10 matches in the two-legged quarter-finals, England’s fifth Champions League slot was confirmed.
There is still the opportunity for additional slots, but the conditions are quite complex. Clubs like Liverpool or Aston Villa have to win their respective European competitions (Champions League or Europa League), but finish outside the league’s top five. If that happens, they will still qualify for the Champions League without reducing their league position.
If two teams carry out this scenario simultaneously, then seven English clubs could appear in the Champions League next season.
Europa League Slot Odds
There are a minimum of two places available for English clubs in the Europa League. Usually, sixth place in the league and FA Cup champions get this ticket.
However, if the FA Cup winner comes from a team that has already qualified for European competition through the league (for example finishing in the top six), then the quota is transferred to the next highest ranked team that has not yet qualified.
An additional scenario could see seventh, eighth or even ninth place qualifying for the Europa League, depending on the results of English clubs in European competitions.
If Crystal Palace win the Conference League and finish outside the top six, they will also appear in the Europa League the following season.
Conference League Slot Odds
The English Conference League slot is obtained through the EFL Cup champion, namely Manchester City. However, as they are almost certain to finish in the top six, that slot will be passed to the next highest ranked team that has not yet qualified for Europe.
In various scenarios, the team ranked eighth, ninth, or even 10th still has the opportunity to appear in the Conference League.
Is it possible for 11 English clubs to appear in Europe?
The answer: possible, but very small.
For that to happen, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace must both win their respective European competitions, while also finishing outside the league qualification zone. If all of these are fulfilled, then the composition becomes:
- 7 teams in the Champions League
- 3 teams in the Europa League
- 1 team in the Conference League
However, the chance of this scenario occurring is only around 0.02%, meaning it only happens twice in 10,000 simulations.
Most Realistic Scenario
Looking at current conditions, it is likely that there will be no additional slots from this extreme scenario. Liverpool is predicted to finish in the top five, while Aston Villa also has a big chance of remaining in the top zone.
Thus, the most plausible scenario is:
- 5 teams to the Champions League
- 2 teams to the Europa League
- 1 team to the Conference League
This means that the top eight in the Premier League standings have the opportunity to appear in European competition next season.
Teams That Still Have a Chance
Outside the top seven at the moment, Brighton has a big chance of finishing in eighth position. Brentford also has the potential to reach seventh position.
Everton shows a strong chance of entering the European zone, while Fulham, Newcastle, Sunderland and Bournemouth are still in contention.
Crystal Palace has the biggest chance of winning the Conference League, although they still have the chance to finish in the top eight of the league.
All these teams also hope that Liverpool and Aston Villa can win the European title but fail to finish in the top five, because that would open up more slots for English clubs.
