Best Free London Itinerary: Walking Tour for Day 1
London Planning Doesn’t Have to Be Overwhelming.
London is amazing. But planning a London itinerary, especially on the eventful first day, can feel like a full-time job.
Should you book tickets to London’s top attractions? Which direction should you walk? Is it possible to see the iconic sights without spending a lot of money? How much can you overcome with jetlag from a transatlantic flight?
As a London travel expert and consultant, I know the anxiety that comes with maximizing your time and budget. That’s why I designed the perfect solution: The Best Free London Walking Itineraries for Day 1.
This is more than just a list of free places to see in London; these are strategically optimized self-guided routes connecting the city’s most famous landmarks. This is a day that will make you feel, ‘WOW! I’m in London on my dream trip!’
This London itinerary is proof that with the guidance of an expert, you can gain valuable experience without opening your wallet. Consider these premium London travel suggestions, tested by Americans living in London since 2013.

Stops 1-3: Starting from the Heart of London
Trafalgar Square
- Atmosphere: This is arguably the single most “Londony” place you can visit. This line connects directly to the Mall (the ceremonial route of the Royal Family you see on TV), the National Gallery (a huge and iconic building) and is located on the edge of the famous Piccadilly Circus.
- Expert Insight: I recommend to all my travel consulting clients that this is the BEST area to book a hotel for maximum comfort. But be prepared to pay a premium for such a good location. It’s also just minutes from dozens of West End theaters and great dining venues. For further guidance, see my article: Travel Tips for Choosing a Hotel When Visiting London.
2. National Gallery
- Atmosphere: Home to masterpieces by artists such as Van Gogh, Da Vinci, and Turner. Free to enter the main collection. It’s the perfect low-commitment culture: you can stop by for 30 minutes to see a particular wing or simply admire its impressive facade.
- Notes on Login: Although the main collection is free, admission is managed. Even though they have a line, you have to wait in line. Booking a free timed entry slot in advance is always recommended to minimize waiting time. (See my guide to essential pre-planning: What You Should Plan in Advance for a Trip to London).
3. Walk through the Mall (to Buckingham Palace)
- Atmosphere: This magnificent tree-lined road is a ceremonial route that leads directly to the palace. This is an eventful and beautiful walk, the perfect way to stretch your legs and shake off the stiffness of the journey.
Hotel
If you haven’t booked a hotel for your trip to London yet, here’s an interactive map to get you started! It is based on the most central location in the city.
Stops 4-6: Monarchy, Parliament and River Crossing
4. Buckingham Palace (Exterior View)
- Atmosphere: Obligatory photo stop.
- Important Advice: Interior tours only run for a limited time during the summer months. If you don’t want to spend time dealing with large crowds, delays, and possible last-minute cancellations due to rain, you might as well enjoy the grand exterior and save some energy instead of waiting for the Changing of the Guard ceremony. And mind you, formal ceremonies with all the pomp and circumstance you see on TV don’t happen every day of the week. So make sure you know when to leave!

5. St. Patrick’s Park James and Birdhouse Road
- Atmosphere: Walk down Birdcage Walk, past St. James’s Park. This provides a refreshing green break between the Royal and Parliamentary zones.
6. Westminster Abbey, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament
Atmosphere: The historic heart of British democracy. You’ll see the exterior of the Abbey (site of the Coronation and Royal Wedding) and the newly renovated Elizabeth Tower (home to Big Ben) and the Houses of Parliament.
Stops 7-8: Westminster Bridge and South Bank Complete
7. Cross Westminster Bridge
- Atmosphere: The most beautiful views of the Houses of Parliament, the river and the city skyline.
- Local Tips: The river is the Thames, pronounced “Tems”, which rhymes with “jewel”.
- Security Advisory: When crossing, pay special attention to your cell phone and personal belongings. Pickpockets often operate in and around the bridge, sometimes posing as artists or tourists.

8. South Bank Walk and London Eye
Dinner Tips: South Bank offers many excellent dining options. Our favorite, Anchor (Bankside), offers great views and a busy atmosphere, especially on a sunny day.
Atmosphere: Fantastic and lively riverside walk. If you don’t plan to actually ride the London Eye, walking past it is enough for a great photo.
Photo Tips: This location is perfect around dusk. You can potentially get beautiful photos of the London Eye both at Golden Hour and at night, offering a dramatic end to this free walking tour of London.
