BEST Things to Do in London at Christmas

Imagine stepping into a Christmas movie! That’s what London feels like in December. Even the most stubborn Londoner would be hard-pressed to remain a Scrooge here.

Every year, people ask me that That list. I think that’s the best thing to do in London at Christmas. Here he is. I have done Christmas activities here every year since 2012 and have been writing about them ever since. From light trails to candlelit concerts, I’ve seen it all.

This is what still makes me feel like I’ve stepped into a Christmas movie. At all times.

If you’re planning a Christmas trip to London, you’re probably already buried in endless “must do” lists written by people who spend the weekend here.

Which are actually? Some big attractions are overrated, but the right attraction can still capture the magic of a lifetime. BUT you have to know where to go and how to plan it.

So here’s my definitive guide to the best things to do in London at Christmas. It’s an experience worth your time, money and camera (yes, just the data plan).

Magical London Experience

See London’s Famous Christmas Lights

Bond Street, Regent Street, Carnaby and Covent Garden have each become famous in their own way, with the glamor of Bond Street and Carnaby-themed exhibitions leading the way.

London insider tip: Go around 3:30pm to take day and night photos as the city changes. If you’d rather skip the crowds, a London Christmas Lights Bus Tour is a great way to see it all without having to jostle for sidewalk space.

Christmas at Kew

Kew Gardens transforms every December with a laser show, light tunnel and fire garden set to music. This is one of London’s most magical celebratory events. And it sold out quickly.

London insider tip: Book a table at Tap on Line before your visit. It’s the only pub at a Tube station in London and makes the perfect pre-show stop for dinner or drinks. This is also Young’s Pub, one of our favorites. We’ve reviewed their Christmas menu this year and it’s amazing!

winter wonderland

Part fairground, part festive holiday, Winter Wonderland has it all. You’ll find Bavarian villages, ice bars, circuses and giant wheels. Londoners feel the costs have become prohibitively expensive and many are targeting them on social media. There’s some truth to that too. But, you have to go at least very!

London insider tip: Arrive around 1pm on weekdays to enjoy the daytime and nighttime views. Buy ride and meal packages online in advance to save money.

Festive Food & Drink Things to Do in London at Christmas

enjoy Christmas afternoon tea

London hosts afternoon tea all year round, but December adds extra sparkle and warmth. Christmas cake, spiced scones and champagne. Try the Conrad St James, Royal Horseguards Hotel or Intercontinental Park Lane. You can even go there by main bus route!

London insider tip: Choose a Christmas Afternoon Tea at a location near your other plans to save time and travel smarter. There are so many great options that location is more important than chasing “the best.” Remember, ‘the best’ is only determined but what you are looking for. That’s how I show you how to determine the Best Afternoon Tea in London.

enjoy lively pub dinner & drinks

You can’t celebrate Christmas in London without visiting a proper pub. Churchill’s Gun in Kensington is worth a visit for the exterior alone! It is covered in hundreds of lights and Christmas trees. Inside, you will find delicious Thai food. This is a Fuller’s pub, one of the few groups in London that consistently serves good food.

London insider tip: Reserve a table if you plan to dine in. The crowd of decorations became even busier when the lights were turned on. And if you don’t know what to expect in terms of bookings, drinks and British culture in this setting, read my Tips for Visiting London Pubs for help beforehand.

visit fortnum & bricklayers

If you love food, shopping and Christmas, you’ll probably never leave Fortnum’s. From tea and biscuits to hampers and sparkling wine, everything here feels like a treat. The window display is worth a special visit. And stairs are always a fun decoration!

London insider tip: Allow extra time. It was beautiful but busy and the queue for hampers and tea moved slowly.

Classic Christmas Traditions

visit a Christmas market in London

London Markets are all about atmosphere, fun and lively food, plus a little shopping.

  • London Bridgeunrivaled views of Tower Bridge and the skyline
  • South Bank Centerperfect for a drink and a walk by the river
  • St Katharine’s Pier Victorian Villagenew this year, with independent gins and brands

London insider tip: Don’t expect European style originality. You’ll find the most unique stalls at St Katharine Docks, while London Bridge offers the best setting for taking photos. To read more about what to expect there (and what to look out for!), take an in-depth look at the London Bridge Christmas Market. You’ll also find interesting ideas to consider ahead of time in my ideas for the Best Things to Buy in London.

go ice skating

Somerset House is a classic London arena. But the Glide experience at Battersea Power Station feels newer and less busy. Even if you don’t skate, it’s still worth a visit for the views and atmosphere.

London insider tip: Glide is best done in the middle of the week. You can watch from the sidelines while having a drink and still feel part of it. Plus, I think it’s best for families.

Culture & Entertainment Things to Do in London for Christmas

Hogwarts in the snow

The Warner Bros. Studio Tour gets a complete Christmas makeover, with snow-covered sets and the Great Hall dressed up for the season.

London insider tip: If tickets are sold out, check out coach tour packages. Carriers often hold advance allocations that cover transportation and entry. I present a detailed review of your options for How to Go to a Harry Potter Studio Tour on this website as well.

see a lively performance

London’s theater scene shines brightest at Christmas. Classic like Christmas Song, Musical Fairy And Nutcracker never fails to impress.

attend a candlelight concert

These concerts combine classical music and film under flickering candlelight in venues such as Southwark Cathedral or Westminster’s Central Hall.

London insider tip: You don’t need front row seats unless you plan on filming (which is always the case for me!). We went to Christmas Movie Theme Song last year and already have tickets for it Christmas Carols by Candlelight for this year. They are addictive.
