It is considered that the Cityzens-Liverpool rivalry will not exceed the classic Liverpool-MU duel

Gilabola.com – It is considered that Manchester City will never be able to match the greatness of Liverpool and Manchester United, even though they continue to win trophies and become a major force in England.

This opinion was conveyed by former Liverpool defender, Jamie Carragher, who considered that the history and identity of the two clubs was too strong for City to surpass.

Carragher explained that since being taken over by new owners in 2008, Manchester City has experienced extraordinary development.

In the last two decades, they have transformed into one of the most dominant teams in England and Europe. However, according to him, great achievements do not automatically make City the biggest club in the country.

He believes that a club’s greatness is not only determined by the number of trophies, but also its history, supporter base and cultural influence in English football.

In his view, United and Liverpool had established global reputations long before the modern era began. Therefore, even though City continues to add to their title collection, Carragher believes that the position of these two giants will not be shifted.

Carragher also said that the rivalry between Liverpool and Manchester United has historical value that is difficult to match. He believes that the match between the two teams has been ingrained in English football culture, long before City emerged as a new force.

According to Carragher, the rivalry between Liverpool and Manchester City has been intense in recent years because it often determines the title race. However, he emphasized that from a historical perspective, the Liverpool versus United duel remains the biggest in England.

Rivalry and Club Size

Carragher also added that clubs that emerged later would find it difficult to achieve iconic status like Liverpool and Manchester United. He believes that a club’s great identity has been ‘sculpted’ by its long history, achievements and loyalty of supporters across generations.

According to him, even though City continues to win domestic and European titles, it is difficult to imagine them being able to surpass these two clubs in terms of influence and big name.

He even predicted that, even though City added to their trophy collection and United experienced a decline, it would not change the map of English football’s historical greatness.

Carragher once considered that Liverpool and City’s rivalry was one of the most intense in terms of quality of play. But this time he emphasized that intensity is not the same as greatness.

In his view, the term ‘greatest’ only deserves to be applied to Liverpool and Manchester United because both of them have long shaped the face of English football.

Statistically, Liverpool currently leads the number of trophies with 70 titles, including 20 league titles and six European Cups. Manchester United is slightly below with 68 trophies, while City has only achieved 36 titles, the same as Chelsea.

Although City are now considered a modern powerhouse, Carragher believes that historical heritage remains a key differentiator. He considers City’s greatness in the Pep Guardiola era to be just a phase of modern glory that is not enough to replace the ‘biggest club’ status that Liverpool and Manchester United previously had.

For Carragher, big clubs are not just champions, but symbols that live in the history, culture and emotions of their supporters. Therefore, he believes that, no matter how big Manchester City’s current dominance is, the status of these two red giant clubs will remain eternal.
