Liverpool confirms they will not let go of Joe Gomez even though AC Milan is interested
Gilabola.com – Liverpool will certainly not sell Joe Gomez in the January transfer window, even though AC Milan continues to show interest in the 28 year old defender.
The club considers Gomez’s departure to be too risky because their central defenders are currently limited, while other players in a similar position are still plagued by injuries.
AC Milan reportedly tried to bring in Gomez at the end of the transfer market last summer. However, this effort failed because Liverpool were reluctant to let go of one of their senior defenders.
Gomez has actually rarely appeared this season. He has never started in the Premier League or Champions League, and has only started in the Carabao Cup. However, coach Arne Slot still considers him an important back-up for Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.
This condition made Milan look at him again ahead of the mid-season transfer market. The Italian club views Gomez as an ideal option to strengthen the back line in the three-back scheme favored by coach Massimiliano Allegri.
However, it is believed that Liverpool will not accept any offers until there are additional new players in the center back position. With Marc Guehi still at Crystal Palace and Giovanni Leoni long injured, the chances of a move for Gomez in January are almost closed.
This situation is actually similar to what happened at the end of last August. When Guehi’s transfer failed to materialize, Gomez’s position at Anfield became safe. Liverpool even rejected a loan offer from Milan because they were only willing to let the player go permanently and at a high price.
Milan understands this firm attitude and is now starting to move on to other targets. Meanwhile, Liverpool believes Gomez is still needed to maintain squad depth, especially after many defenders left the club in the last two years.
Even though he rarely plays, Gomez is still considered a professional figure who is ready to be deployed at any time. He has never shown any desire to leave and remains committed to the team he has played for for more than a decade.
Contracts and Prospects for Next Season
Gomez’s contract will end in the next 12 months. Although there have been no official talks about an extension, the possibility of negotiations remains open. The club is said to still want to retain experienced players who can play in several back positions.
Next season is expected to be a decisive period. If Liverpool recruits a new defender, then Gomez could be looking for another challenge. However, if several of the main defenders leave or are injured, he may again have an important role.
Gomez is also aware that every minute he plays this season could be his last chance to show his value and loyalty to the club. With 11 years of service, his decision in 2026 will mark the end or a new chapter in his career at Anfield.
Liverpool itself is facing a transition period in defense. Several defenders’ contracts will end at the same time, including Konate, who has the potential to leave on a free transfer. This condition means that management must be careful not to lose too many players at once.
With long experience and high loyalty, Liverpool does not seem ready to let go of the player who has been part of the club since 2015. At least until next summer, Joe Gomez will still wear Liverpool’s red uniform.
