PSG failed in their 300th match in Europe
Gilabola.com – PSG has just become the first French club to play 300 European matches, but lost to Sporting CP in the match week 7 of the Champions League, early Wednesday 21 January 2026.
It was Les Parisiens’ second defeat in the prestigious competition for top European clubs this season.
The defending champions lost 2-1 after Luis Javier Suarez scored the second goal, which determined Sporting’s victory over Luis Enrique’s team.
The Colombian international player who also played for Marseille scored two goals in the 74th and 90th minutes and became a hero for the home team.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia – who played as a substitute at the start of the match, gave PSG hope by scoring the equalizer with a spectacular kick in the 79th minute.
PSG Dominated the Game in the Second Half
However, Enrique’s squad looked more fragile than when they won last season, and lost in the final minutes of the match. One important thing, in the Champions League, PSG has never won in Portugal, with three defeats in five matches).
Ahead of Suarez’s goal was a surprise – and unimaginable after the first half, as Paris managed to take control late on with 15 shots – including four on target, and 78 percent possession.
Unfortunately, PSG dominated the game, but failed to take advantage of their opportunities, and lacked the firepower needed in front of the opponent’s goal. A little doubt even appeared to appear in the minds of the Les Parisiens players.
PSG also made mistakes, especially in defense, where Lucas Chevalier didn’t really play flawlessly for Sporting’s second goal.
Unfortunately, this is not the first time the goalkeeper has made a mistake, and Chevalier has conceded too many goals in the Champions League, namely 10 goals in six matches.
PSG Must Be Careful and Improve
Of course, this is another big warning for PSG ahead of their other important matches, which they will soon play again in the Champions League.
PSG even has the chance to be knocked out of the top eight before the deciding match against Newcastle next week.
Victory in their last four Champions League matches means PSG could be knocked out of the top eight after match week 7. Finishing in the top eight would allow them to avoid the play-offs and qualify directly for the last 16.
The competition for the top two positions now seems out of reach for Enrique’s squad. Two lucky teams – Arsenal and one other club, will get a big advantage, namely they will play all their second leg matches at home until the final which will be held in Budapest on 30 May 2026.

Our opinion
PSG suffered a surprising defeat at home to Sporting CP. Luis Enrique and his players must be really aware of the situation they are in, or they could be very disappointed because they are knocked out of the top eight and have to go through the playoffs.
