Thibaut Courtois Urges Fans to Stop Verbal Abuse, Highlights Players’ Mental Condition

Gilabola.com – Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has spoken out strongly about the increasing abuse directed at players, both in the stadium and on social media. This pressure emerged after his colleague, Vinicius Jr, again became the target of racist ridicule, and after the incident experienced by Barcelona defender, Ronald Araujo.

Thibaut Courtois has called on football fans to show greater “respect”. This request was made following an incident that happened to his Real Madrid teammate, Vinicius Jr, who was the target of harassment by opposing fans during Los Blancos’ 3-0 win over Athletic Club in Bilbao on Wednesday.

Vinicius Jr responded to some of the spectators at the San Mames stadium in the second half of the La Liga match with a “three goals” gesture, referring to the score that occurred at that time.

Why Is This Issue Important?

The issue of harassment against Vinicius in Spain is nothing new. Previously, five people had been given suspended prison sentences earlier this year for racist abuse directed at the 25-year-old during a match in 2022.

Courtois emphasized that behind the public image, players are ordinary people. He explicitly highlighted the incident that happened to their eternal rival, Ronald Araujo. The Barcelona defender was allowed to take time off earlier this week to prioritize his mental health.

“In the end, we are ordinary people, we are not machines. Look what happened to Araujo,” said the Real Madrid goalkeeper.

Courtois added that abuse on social media is often a precursor to players’ mental health problems:

  • “In the end, everyone can end up like that [Araujo].”
  • “If you look at what happened after the game [Barcelona] against Chelsea, the abuse he had [Araujo] receive on social media and all that… that’s where it all started.”

Where is the Line between Competition and Harassment?

Courtois emphasized that criticism and competition are an integral part of football, but there are lines that fans should not cross.

“I love the banter and competition that occurs in matches, but I don’t think it should always involve insults,” he stressed.

“It created a good atmosphere, but I think there was a bit of a lack of respect, because we are human beings.”

Courtois’ remarks come amid renewed debate in Spain regarding player protection and increasing abuse, both in stadiums and online. Courtois’ defense of his team-mate echoed Real Madrid’s previous call to take stronger action against discrimination and personal insults aimed at players.

Real Madrid’s win over Athletic Club puts them just one point behind league leaders Barcelona.

Our View

Courtois’ request is a reflection of increasing awareness among top players about the serious impact of abuse. This reinforces the view that issues of harassment, racism and mental health in football are now a collective responsibility, not just for clubs or league authorities.

The Araujo case shows that the negative impact of a toxic fan culture can reach a critical point, and it is hoped that a call from a figure like Courtois can encourage changes in fan behavior.
