Thomas Tuchel Ready to Replace Amorim at Manchester United After the 2026 World Cup?

Gilabola.com – Thomas Tuchel could reportedly leave the England national team coaching chair after the 2026 FIFA World Cup and return to the Premier League to take over the hot seat at Manchester United — at least, that’s the rumors starting to emerge from a number of sources.

Tuchel Contract and England Performance

Since being officially introduced as coach of the England national football team in the fall of 2024, Tuchel signed a contract until the end of the 2026 World Cup. In his initial period in charge, the 52-year-old coach recorded six wins from seven matches, only hampered by one defeat against Senegal last June. Their latest victory came when they hosted the Wales national football team at Wembley Stadium.

Tuchel’s mission with the Three Lions is very clear: to bring England to their first world title since 1966. Even though his record is impressive so far, his future will be largely determined by the results of next summer’s big tournament in North America.

Before coaching the national team, Tuchel pursued a career at club level with Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea FC, FC Bayern München and Paris Saint-Germain. However, even though he looked comfortable during the interview, a source said that he actually “didn’t really enjoy” his job as national team coach.

Rumors emerge about Manchester United

The issue of Tuchel’s return to the Premier League emerged from comments from former Chelsea FC, SL Benfica and West Ham United FC left-back, Scott Minto. In his interview on talkSPORT, he said that Tuchel could replace the current Manchester United coach, Ruben Amorim, after the World Cup.

According to Minto, Amorim will likely stay until the end of this season, but after that Tuchel could come in as a replacement. Amorim himself, who took over as United coach on November 1 2024 from Erik ten Hag, is under great pressure. In 50 matches, the Portuguese coach recorded 19 wins, 12 draws and 19 defeats — and has not even been able to string together two consecutive wins.

Even so, one of the club owners, Jim Ratcliffe, still provides support. In his statement on The Times Business Podcast, Ratcliffe said it took Amorim three years to prove himself as a great coach. He also criticized the British media for demanding instant results, as if everything could change “as quickly as turning on a light switch”.

United itself will compete again in the Premier League against Liverpool FC at Anfield after the October international break ends.

Tuchel’s views on Old Trafford

Interestingly, Tuchel himself once spoke about Manchester United when he was still coaching Bayern in 2023. In a press conference ahead of the match at Old Trafford, he admitted that he really respected United and said the club had a “special aura and mentality” which was strengthened by the support of their supporters.

“For me personally, playing against Manchester United is always a big match. It can’t be explained in any other way,” said Tuchel at the time.

“Old Trafford is one of the biggest stages in football. There is a certain aura and electricity there. When they are good, they are really dangerous in all positions.”

With that statement, it is not surprising that rumors of Tuchel’s move to United began to strengthen towards the end of his tenure as England coach.
